Drug Take-Back BoxWeeks Medical Center Taking Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs at New Drug Take-Back Box

Weeks Medical Center has installed a secure Drug Take-Back box for the disposal of unused or unwanted prescription drugs. The purpose of the Drug Take-Back Box is to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Now anyone can bring prescription pills to Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster any day for free and anonymous disposal.

The Take-Back Box is part of an initiative to address a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that sit in home cabinets or counters are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year that the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else’s medication being stolen from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, the usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—pose potential safety, environmental, and health hazards.

“Disposing of prescription drugs is no longer a hassle with the Weeks Drug Take-Back Box,” says John Eddy, pharmacist at Weeks Medical Center. “You no longer have to wait for annual take-back days or worry about keeping potentially harmful substances in your home longer than needed. Just bring your unused drugs to the Take-Back Box and drop them in. No forms to sign. No questions asked. The disposal is anonymous and a free service to our community.”

The Take-Back Box is available for pills and tablets only. Liquids, needles, and sharps are not accepted at the Take-Back Box. The Take-Back Box is located just off the main lobby at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster.
