Wound Care & Healing

A comprehensive approach for treating patients with non-healing wounds or sores.

Wound Care & Healing

Chronic wounds are a pain.

The Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine Center at Weeks Medical Center is the only dedicated wound care center in the North Country. Appointments and consultations are also available through Weeks Medical Center’s Outreach Clinic at the AVH Professional Center in Berlin. The center offers a comprehensive approach for treating patients with non-healing wounds or sores. The center is an outpatient, hospital-based program staffed by a team of medical specialists who work closely with a patient’s primary care provider to treat wounds that will not heal on their own. Our specialists thoroughly assess the underlying causes of each patient’s wound and recommend an individualized treatment plan. The center uses the latest scientifically proven methods, dressings, and technologies for the treatment of patients with non-healing wounds.

Types of Wounds

The Wound Healing Center treats all types of wounds—chronic wounds and acute wounds. Chronic wounds can be caused by ongoing systemic disease such as diabetes, poor circulation (blood flow), or chronic swelling or pressure on certain parts of the body such as the lower legs and feet. An acute wound may be the result of an accident, trauma, or surgery. Unlike less severe wounds, chronic or acute wound treatment requires ongoing care over a period of weeks or even months.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

One of the exciting features of the Wound Healing Center is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which is one of the most advanced therapies in the treatment of non-healing wounds. HBOT delivers high concentrations of oxygen to the blood stream and wound bed, which rapidly accelerates the healing process. This therapy aids in wound closure, new tissue growth, wound tissue regeneration, and much more. Patients receiving HBOT treatments relax on a bed encased in a large see-through acrylic shell as they are surrounded by 100 percent oxygen at higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure. The only sensation patients experience is a slight pressure in the ears when the pressure changes.

Healogics Network

The Wound Healing Center is a member of the Healogics network, which is comprised of academic medical centers, hospitals, and thousands of professionals committed to advancing wound healing by creating, sharing, and activating wound prevention and care expertise.
